Way back in September of 2011 (just two months after moving to Panama), I unexpectedly returned stateside for my grandfather's funeral. Upon my return, I wrote this post.
I am happy to report that now, 18 months after moving to Panama, and 16 months after writing that post, I am able to drink Panama milk without gagging. Riba Smith brand skim milk, to be precise.
I am now officially over my Panama culture-shock. (For now. Don't mention that in-a-box, non-refrigerated, stays-good-for-years milk. I'm never gonna drink that stuff.)
Really? You don't like the red box with the white cow? La Chiricana is the only milk I enjoy drinking solo here. The Doro kind isn't too bad...sometimes. I've found that the biggest problem with milk here is that it isn't consistent. One gallon will taste fine, but then I'll buy the same brand a week later and it will have a funky taste. That's only happened once with the La Chiricana kind. I know the "stays-good-for-years" milk seems kind of strange, right? I hope I don't grow horns or anything.
ReplyDeletealas, nope... i could never get over the mental block to buy the milk in a box, so i've never even tried it. i went through a few brands when first moving here of the fresh stuff - bonlac, estrealla azul - but they were all too yucky tasting. who knows, the box stuff might be just fine - but considering i had an aversion to the hyper-processed-for-extended-freshness milk that costco sold back home, i suspect i'd be able to tell the difference. so yep, it's riba's own refrigerated moo juice for me. i'm convinced the nasty flavor is in the fat content, though - we had leftover whole milk from thanksgiving's mashed potatoes and that still tasted yucky to me.
